○ the situation

A locally owned and operated snack bar company was looking to expand its reach and enhance its online presence. As a “hold you over” snack bar, they are a popular product within the fitness community, as well as with active parents. They do pretty well with in-store sales as their product is carried in many local gyms, cafes, and also a number of Whole Foods nationwide.

We had the unique challenge of increasing sales for a grab-and-go snack bar–online. With a price point of roughly $4 per bar and $40 for a box of 12, we knew we had to get creative with our messaging and visuals to help spread awareness and encourage online purchases.

We had the unique challenge of increasing sales for a grab-and-go snack–online.

● the solution

We began by examining their current branding and packaging to see if there was any opportunity for a visual update. Knowing that they are pretty well known throughout the South Florida region, we didn’t want to completely rebrand them and risk loosing loyal customers. We did a slight modernization to the logo, keeping the overall structure and design intact, allowing it to still be recognizable.

Packaging: We knew we wanted to update the packaging and develop something fun and energetic. Since the packaging doesn’t show the product, we wanted to create a design that was all about appealing to the senses, making each flavor look appetizing. I assisted with art direction on the packaging. My Chief of Creative developed many different looks for the “pouches” utilizing real photography to help communicate flavor. I stepped in and assisted with creating some typographic options and illustrated ones as well. Ultimately, we landed on a flat-illustration style to showcase each flavor combination.

It was all about appealing to the senses, making each flavor look appetizing without seeing the actual snack bar.

Web Design: I led the redesign of their Shopify e-commerce website, working with my creative team on building out their new brand language, typography, icon design, and illustration.. Using WebGL, I worked with our dev and UX team to create a custom snack box builder that I coined the “BYOB: Build Your Own Box.” This feature has been a huge selling point for their customers, allowing full customization of their order. We also installed a subscription plugin, allowing customers to subscribe and save on their favorite flavors.

Marketing: I worked with my marketing team to create monthly marketing campaigns ideas to promote the new brand and website, announce new flavor releases, advertise holiday sales and more. Though this, I designed social media graphics, web banners, and email marketing to visually communicate each campaign. Each month, we monitored click rates, sales, and conversion rates.

My role within this project:

  • Art Direction

  • Creative Copywriting

  • Package Design

  • Web Design

  • Handoff and Management

  • Email Marketing

◆ conclusion

Since the rebrand, this snack bar company has improved sales, converted new customers and grown their business with launching new flavors and products. The packaging has become a huge crowd pleaser, becoming a “selfie” favorite for instagram. The website has enabled them to improve sales one step further with the BYOB and subscription platform. I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project as I got to be involved in so many aspects that taught me so much about product design, consumer habits, and business.
